Writer, Nicola Gill, visited Quinta Splendida
If you want to combine a me-time spa break with a romantic island adventure in stunning natural surroundings, Quinta Splendida has it all.
Originally a grand 19th-century manor house, it’s nestled on a rocky outcrop with endless views over the Atlantic.
More recently, it’s been extended to form a series of low-rise rooms, suites and apartments surrounded by acres of lush sub-tropical gardens.
The spa area, hewn out of the volcanic rock, feels separate enough from the hotel that if it’s not your partner’s cup of tea he needn’t feel he’s the odd one out – and it’s also stylishly minimal, so most men wouldn’t feel out of place heading there for a massage.
I spent a blissful afternoon having a 60-minute Swedish massage, plus one of the best full pedicures I’ve ever had, then another hour alternating between the sauna and steam room.
Followed by complimentary peppermint tea on the private spa terrace with my feet up, admiring the ocean view and my new toes.
The original manor house is now The Pearl, one of three restaurants on site serving local seafood specialities in gorgeous but relaxed surroundings.
A short taxi ride away is the city of Funchal is packed with great architecture, restaurants, wonderful shops and markets.
